About
Amy Cale-Huebner is an award-winning writer and photographer whose work spans from editorial to advertising. She published her first piece in The Surfer’s Journal in 1994. Since then, her work has appeared in SAND, The Kelp Journal, Conde Nast Traveler, The Baltimore Review, and The Smithsonian.
She holds a BFA in Photography from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA, a foundation that shaped her creative vision. Her passion for image-making has taken her across continents, capturing moments in the United States, Mexico, and Europe. Notably, she spent two years in Germany, doing product photography for BAYER and a six-month stint on a film project with renowned director Wim Wenders.
Surfing has always played a big part in Amy’s life. She learned to surf in Santa Cruz, CA., and after college, she worked for O’Neill one summer with Richard Schmidt, Jay Moriarty, and Wingnut on a European surf school tour, photographing the road trip through the south of France, Spain, and Portugal. While surfing at The Hollister Ranch, Amy met Jim Huebner, who would later become her husband. After moving to Santa Barbara, CA, she began freelancing for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), collaborating with scientists to develop education and outreach exhibits for the Office of National Marine Sanctuaries.
In addition to writing and photography, Amy is currently completing the capstone course in Creative Writing at the UCLA Writers' Program. Her debut novel, ESCAPE FROM TONGA, will be released in November 2025.
Amy lives in Santa Barbara, and when she isn’t writing, editing, or taking photos, you’ll probably find her at the beach or in the forest birding.
