About
Amy Cale-Huebner is an award-winning writer and photographer whose work spans from editorial to advertising. She published her first piece in The Surfer’s Journal in 1994. Since then, her work has appeared in SAND, The Kelp Journal, Conde Naste Traveler, The Baltimore Review, and The Smithsonian.
Amy's commitment to her craft is evident in her educational journey. She has spent two years working on a certificate in Editing and Publishing from the UCLA Extension Writers' Program. She holds a BFA in Photography from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA, a testament to her formal training. Her passion has taken her across continents, capturing moments in the United States, Mexico, and Europe. Notably, she spent two years in Germany, doing product photography for BAYER and a six-month stint on a film project with renowned director Wim Wenders.
Surfing has always played a big part in Amy’s life. She learned to surf in Santa Cruz, CA., and after college, she worked for O’Neill one summer with Richard Schmidt, Jay Moriarty, and Wingnut on a European surf school tour, photographing the road trip through the south of France, Spain, and Portugal.
While surfing at the Hollister Ranch, she met her future husband, Jim Huebner. Amy relocated to Santa Barbara, CA, where she began freelancing for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), working with scientists to develop education and outreach exhibits for The Office of National Marine Sanctuaries.
In addition to writing and photography, Amy offers developmental editing services to writers who seek a sharp editorial eye and guidance toward perfecting the next draft. Amy currently lives in Santa Barbara with her daughter, and when she isn’t writing, editing or taking photos, you’ll probably find her at the beach or in the forest birding.
